About Your Teacher
Hi! My name is Jared Smith and I will be your teacher this next year for 9th grade English! I received a Bachelor's degree in English from California State University of Fullerton, which is also where I did my teaching credential work. English has always been my favorite subject through the years, for I find joy and intrigue in a good book, as well as pleasure in writing a good essay or story. I have discovered that the teachers in school that you always remember are the ones that push you to look deeper, search longer, think harder, and find the reward in everything you learn, and I will definitely be one of those teachers!
One of my favorite past-times is traveling, for I have backpacked all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and even parts of Africa. There is definitely no substitute for the culture shock, valuable life experiences, knowledge, and social connections made through the life of a traveler. Thus, many of my lessons and teaching plans will have a unique cultural perspective that I believe will be enriched through my own experiences. My hope is that, through this site, you will be enveloped with the joy and interest I have in English, leading you to a very rich and successful life of literacy, critical thinking, discovery, and adventure!
Course Background
Throughout this next year in 9th Grade English we will be focusing on some of the great literary authors of the past and present, including William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, John Donne, and Flannery O'Connor. In addition, some of the primary themes and time periods of literature we will be examining involve the Renaissance, the Victorian Period, and Early America. As a student, you will be expected to read, decipher, and form critical opinions about literature, poetry, essays, and multiple other forms of written text. In addition, a large portion of this course focuses on writing, and it is my hope, that by the end of this year, you will be well on your way to developing your own writing style. Although I love creative writing (and there will definitely be much of that throughout the year!), we will be mainly focusing on critical thinking and logical processes in formalized writing. And though I know that may sound dreadful to some, don't worry, I promise it will be fun! We will be focusing on a myriad of issues and themes that correlate directly to your lives, which will definitely keep the class interesting and highly interactive. Plus, it is important to remember that a lot of the skills and knowledge that you gain in this class will continue to aid you in both your education and personal career throughout your life. So take it seriously and do your best!
